YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. - A Seattle man attacked by a grizzly bear underwent surgery and was listed in serious condition Thursday, according to hospital officials. George Terry Langley Jr., 32, spent much of Wednesday night in surgery at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
The left side of Langley's face, the back of his scalp and his ribs were injured during the attack Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Park Service.
Langley was hiking to a campsite on the Black Butte Trail about 28 miles north of West Yellowstone when he encountered two bear cubs. When he moved off the trail to avoid the cubs, their mother attacked.
It was unclear whether Langley saw the adult bear coming, park officials said in a press release.
Langley managed to hike four miles back to the trailhead, where he waved down passing motorists who called for help. He was then flown to the hospital.
The bears were apparently feeding on whitebark pine nuts in the heavily forested area, according to the Park Service.
It was the second mauling in Yellowstone this year. Nothing will be done to the bear because it was reacting to a perceived threat to its cubs, park officials said.
