July 9, 2001 Missoulian (AP) article: Grizzlies clear out tents in campground.
KALISPELL (AP) Glacier National Park officials temporarily closed the Rising Sun Campground to tents Sunday evening because six bears were seen feeding on elk carcasses in the area.
"We're temporarily restricting camping at Rising Sun Campground to hard-sided units," said park spokeswoman Amy Vanderbilt.
CAG Comment
It is illegal to take hard-sided units into the Selway Bitterroot Ecosystem [SBE]. That doesn't deter the environmental groups such as Friends of the Bitterroot [FOB], Earth First, Alliance for the Wild Rockies, National Wildlife Federation, Audubon Society, Sierra Club, to name a few of the hundreds of such organizations that advocate the reintroduction of grizzly bears into the SBE increasing the chances for human/bear conflicts with deadly consequences for humans. even though there is compelling evidence the habitat for grizzly bears does not exist in the SBE.
FOB, let's not increase risk for users of the SBE.
