The Montana Department of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks reported the 3-year-old, 250-pound grizzly had been killed "after an unsuccessful, international, weeklong effort at placing the bear in a zoo," according to a news release.
The bear was snared, darted and removed last week from the Sweetwater Hills area, about 20 miles southeast of Dillon, after it killed sheep. The bear had traveled from the interior of Yellowstone National Park, evidently searching for a new home, officials said. The grizzly had been relocated to the park last fall after being captured near Gardiner, where it developed a taste for apples. Because of its history, a multi-agency evaluation determined that the bear, which was taken to Bozeman, was not suitable for a another relocation into the wild, according to Fish, Wildlife and Parks department.
